MARKHAM, Ontario (April 10th, 2018) ― Multimatic has lost a friend, colleague and mentor. John Miles, a Team Lotus works driver who survived the rampant dangers of Formula 1 racing in the 1960s and went on to become one of the world’s foremost vehicle ride and handling engineers, passed away in England on April 8th, at age 74.
After retiring from motorsport in 1973, John revealed a talent for technical journalism, writing for Britain’s Autocar magazine and Vehicle Dynamics International, before honing and applying his innate chassis development skills at Lotus Engineering for 18 years, and then at Aston Martin for three more.
Multimatic was honoured to have John on the payroll for the past 15 years in an essential vehicle dynamics development role, based out of the company’s European technical centre, where he was also pivotal in facilitating the successful transition of Multimatic DSSV™ spool-valve dampers into global road car applications.
A truly great suspension engineer to the very end, from his hospital bed, John is said to have complained to a colleague about the ride quality of the ambulance that had delivered him there. In the automotive industry and beyond, John Miles will be sadly missed.
