180 Degree Supercab Door Hinge

This novel, synchronized, double-pivot 168º hinge system was engineered by Multimatic with a unique control mechanism that limits motion to only one of the pivot axes at a time.

This feature allows the truck's rear access doors to swing 168º degrees open.

Currently, all existing rear opening pick-up truck hinges swing to a maximum of ninety degrees which effectively "traps" the user between parked cars, requiring the doors to be opened and closed to achieve access. The wide-open rear doors allow the user to access the truck cab even when a parked car is in close proximity.

The control mechanism initially allows the door to outswing around an inner pivot axis to an angle of 85 degrees.

After 85 degrees of swing the control mechanism locks the inner pivot axis and unlocks the outer, allowing the door to rotate through an additional 83 degrees so that it is almost flat against the vehicle.

At the 168º degree position, a separate ball and groove doorcheck holds the system from closing and stops it from further opening.

As is normal practice, two of these hinges are utilized to achieve the required motion and structural stability of the door system. However, to overcome the inherent instability of the double pivot configuration, Multimatic introduced a novel structural coupling bar that joins the moving elements of the two hinges. This bar assures that the two hinges always act as a single structural system which results in performance superior to conventional twin hinge arrangements.
