ACC Composite Underbody

Multimatic was commissioned by the United States Council for Automotive Research LLC (USCAR) Automotive Composites Consortium (ACC) to design, fabricate, test and document a composite underbody replacing the steel assembly in a large, rear-wheel-drive donor vehicle. Designed using a CAE-driven approach to meet applicable government and industry requirements. Tested both non-destructively and destructively, with results bounded by FEA predictions to account for property variations. Quasi-static subassembly test developed to simulate severe loads and to validate FEA models showed that the underbody design, materials, and joints were robust and performed well.
