Suspension Module
The revolutionary Multimatic Suspension Module is a novel design which integrates the energy storage medium (coil, disk or elastomer spring), damper and geometry control element into a single subassembly creating a new paradigm in vehicle ride and handling.
This system can locate both the spring and damper coaxially on the pivot of the suspension geometry control element (control arm), or can be activated remotely via a pushrod arrangement. The vertical wheel motion is transferred into the spring/damper system through a unique cam/cam follower arrangement. The cam profile can be customized to any application, providing an infinite range of wheel rates.
Advantages of the System Include:
- Modular design provides a clean, compact, and complete unit offering great flexibility in packaging and ease of assembly.
- Extremely well contained force system eliminates the requirement for large and heavy load bearing structures in remote areas of the vehicle (e.g. strut towers).
- Fully supportive of active input for control of vehicle roll, squat, and/or ride height through an external torque control rod, thus eliminating the requirement for complicated anti-dive or anti-squat geometries as well as the need for anti-roll bars.
- Three-way adjustable, integral damper with high pressure gas chamber and custom piston providing excellent damping in a compact stroke.
- Rising or falling suspension rates achieved through custom design of the cam profile.
Applications:
Multimatic's GTS1 race car has successfully run a version of the module for two years with no failures. Active roll control has been developed, implemented and tested for this application.
