Replaceable Skateblade System
- Proprietary system emulates razor blades by eliminating sharpening and utilizing a low cost replaceable blade strip
- Critical blade profile is maintained by a removable aluminum rocker. Different shapes (forward, defence, custom) can be accommodated by simply unbolting and changing the rocker
- Unique mechanism facilitates blade changes in less than a minute. Skates can be "sharpened" during a game
- Carbon Fibre, Torque Tube holder configuration results in an overall weight well below existing fixed blade systems while increasing stiffness six times

Multimatic Technical Centre developed this proprietary sports technology from concept to full production
readiness. This included the industrial design, detailed engineering and production process development.
All major program targets were met including replaceable blade cost below that of industry standard
sharpenings and a stiffness/weight ratio far exceeding existing skate systems (despite the addition
of the tensioning mechanism). Advanced finite element techniques were utilized to analyze and optimise
the carbon fibre holder structure for stiffness, impact resistance and durability. Optimised fibre lay-up
schedules were developed along with a cost-effective cloth combination and resin system. A comprehensive
testing program was also undertaken to assure a high level of skating functionality and durability. All
applicable industry standards were met (eg: ASTM F737-86).
Additionally, a high volume manufacturing methodology was developed to produce the carbon fibre holders.
This system is proprietary to Multimatic and allows for cost-effective, expedient manufacture of this
type of multi-laminate composite structure. Additional processes were optimised for the manufacture of
the high strength blades and aluminum rocker component. High volume assembly equipment was also
developed to assure that the final product is of extremely high quality and can be delivered at a
competitive cost.
